Pioneering Search Scientist Jeremy Pickens, Ph.D Joins the Catalyst E-Discovery Research Team
News 2010

Holder of Six Search Patents Will Help Fuel Catalyst’s Ongoing Innovation in E-discovery Search

DENVER—October 4, 2010—Catalyst Repository Systems, Inc., (www.catalystsecure.com), a leader in hosted document repositories for e-discovery and other complex legal matters, announced today that Jeremy Pickens, Ph.D., one of the world's leading search scientists and a pioneer in the field of collaborative exploratory search, has joined the company’s research and development team.  In his new position Dr. Pickens will study the development of collaborative search systems. His work will build on Catalyst's tradition of leadership in developing conceptual and analytical tools that will achieve more intelligent and precise results in search and review processes.

Dr. Pickens has six patents pending in the field of search and information retrieval, including two for collaborative exploratory search systems. Collaborative search, as developed by Dr. Pickens and others, is a form of search in which a small group of people who share a common information need actively collaborate to achieve it. The search system synthesizes the queries of these various people and provides feedback tailored to both the individual and the group.

Catalyst has been at the leading edge of search technology for several years. In 2005, Catalyst integrated Engenium's conceptual search and then went on to develop proprietary clustering and key-concept tools that are among the most powerful in the industry.

“Dr. Pickens is a recognized expert and thought leader in intelligent information retrieval,” said Bruce Kiefer, VP of research and development. “He will prove to be an invaluable resource in our efforts to bring the most advanced search and information retrieval techniques to our clients.”

Dr. Pickens earned his master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval. He conducted his post-doctoral work at King’s College, London, on a joint grant with Goldsmiths University of London. As part of the OMRAS project (Online Music Recognition and Searching), he helped organize the first Music Information Retrieval (ISMIR) conference in Plymouth, Mass. Dr. Pickens has spent the last five years as a research scientist at FX Palo Alto Lab, where his major research themes included video search and collaborative exploratory search.

Dr. Pickens is co-author of the forthcoming book, A Taxonomy of Collaborative Information Seeking, to be published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. He was an editor of the spring 2010 special issue on collaborative information seeking of the journal Information Processing and Management. He is a frequent author and speaker on the topic.
